Cognibox alternative: SafeContractor vs Vendorpass

6 min read · Last reviewed October 6, 2026

If you are looking for a Cognibox alternative, the first thing to know is that Cognibox has been renamed: it is now SafeContractor, offered by Veriforce Canada. Most people searching are Canadian property, facility or construction teams who mainly need to track vendor insurance, workers' comp clearances and licences, and who want published pricing and no fees for their vendors. SafeContractor suits larger, industrial contractor programs; a lighter credential tracking tool may suit narrower needs.

What happened to Cognibox

Cognibox was founded in 2005 and has strong roots in Quebec. Alcumus, a risk management group, acquired it in June 2022. In late 2024, Veriforce announced it had been acquired by Apax Partners, which also owns Alcumus, and the businesses merged under the Veriforce name.

As of October 2026, Veriforce Canada states that "the Cognibox name changed to SafeContractor" and describes SafeContractor as formerly Cognibox and ContractorCheck. Cognibox.com now redirects to Veriforce Canada, and its contractor logins still run on cognibox.net. If you or your vendors still call it Cognibox, you are talking about SafeContractor.

What SafeContractor (formerly Cognibox) does well

As of October 2026, Veriforce Canada describes SafeContractor as a product for contractor qualification, compliance, training and site access. Its published features include:

  • Consistent qualification criteria across sites and business units.
  • Centralized documentation, including required documents, ESG questionnaires and certification records.
  • Site eligibility checks to confirm contractor status before work begins.
  • Training assignment and tracking through eLearning, plus related products for employee records (SafeEmployee) and training (SafeLearning).
  • Ongoing tracking with automated reminders, renewals and status updates.
  • A SafeContractor Badge for contractors who meet its standards, assessed through a tailored, risk-based questionnaire.

Veriforce Canada reports more than 500 hiring clients, more than 40,000 contractors and more than 900 sites using its solutions, and its contractor registration page lists sectors from mining, utilities and manufacturing to facilities and property management. For large industrial sites with worker-level training and access control needs, that depth and its multilingual Canadian teams are real strengths.

Why some organizations look for a Cognibox alternative

The reasons are usually about fit. Common situations include:

  • Scope is broader than the need. A property manager or condo board may only need certificates of insurance, WSIB clearances, licences and a few certifications, not site access control or eLearning.
  • Who pays matters to your vendors. SafeContractor's contractor registration includes a payment step to become a member, so contractors pay to take part. Fee amounts are not published on the registration page. Small local trades sometimes hesitate to pay to serve one more building.
  • Pricing is not published. As of October 2026, hiring clients are invited to request a demo rather than shown a price.
  • The rename prompts a review. When a familiar product changes name and ownership, some teams take the chance to check whether it still matches what they use.

Vendorpass focuses on credentials. You set requirements per vendor or trade (liability insurance with a minimum limit, workers' comp clearance, licence, certification), send automated requests, and receive email reminders 30, 14 and 7 days before a document expires and on the day it does. It flags mismatches such as $2M on file when you require $5M, and keeps an audit history. Workers' comp requirements use each province's own name, from WSIB to CNESST. Plan details are on the pricing page.

When SafeContractor is still the better choice

  • You run industrial sites where workers need assigned training, orientations and access control before entry.
  • You want contractors assessed against an accreditation standard, not only their documents tracked. Vendorpass does not review health and safety programs or perform audits.
  • You need ESG questionnaires or a large existing contractor network, especially in Quebec.
  • Your contractors already hold SafeContractor memberships for other clients, so joining your program adds little for them.

Vendorpass is also newer and does not offer a mobile app or integrations. If those matter, weigh them honestly.

How to evaluate a switch

  1. List what you actually check. Write down the documents you require by trade. Our contractor compliance checklist is a starting point.
  2. Export your current vendor list with contacts and the expiry dates of documents on file.
  3. Set requirements by vendor or trade, including minimum insurance limits.
  4. Send requests to a sample group, such as vendors renewing in the next quarter.
  5. Run both systems in parallel for one renewal cycle and compare gaps caught and staff time.
  6. Tell vendors what changes for them, including whether they still need SafeContractor for other clients.

Every Vendorpass account starts free, and the free plan covers up to 3 vendors, enough to run that test first.
